Investment Analyst / Investment Senior Analyst

About the team

The Investment team plays an integral role within ARENA by working collaboratively with industry, research institutions and government to support initiatives that accelerate the reduction of Australia’s global emissions through technology innovation.   

Key accountabilities for the Investments team are:  

• Designing and implementing funding programs and initiatives
• Soliciting, appraising and providing feedback on funding proposals  
• Coordinating external due diligence  
• Preparation of funding approvals  
• Negotiation of funding agreements in collaboration with Portfolio Management
• Management of the ARENA Advisory Panel  
• Management and participation in industry working groups, such as “A-Labs”  
• Supporting the renewable energy startup community  

About the role

As an Investment Analyst in the Investment team, you will primarily be involved with the origination and execution of investment opportunities across multiple renewable energy technologies. You will quantify and evaluate the risks and benefits of funding applications across ARENA’s investment priorities and budget measures. This involves considering the strategic, financial, technical, operational, social, environment, regulatory and risk elements of a transaction. 

The role requires skills in project and stakeholder management, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability synthesise technical and commercial information into succinct recommendations, and detailed financial and quantitative analysis. You will be involved in the initial screening and approval processes for prospective funding opportunities as well as the preparation and management of internal processes, client engagement and reporting.   

What we’re looking for

We are primarily seeking candidates at Investment Analyst level, however welcome applications from those at Investment Senior Analyst level.

Knowledge and experience

Investment Analyst

• Approximately 2–4 years’ experience in a related field (e.g. finance, energy, engineering, infrastructure, consulting or advisory).
• Demonstrated experience supporting complex transactions, projects or investment processes.
• Financial modelling and quantitative analysis experience, including sensitivity analysis and sound model design principles.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving capability.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.

 Investment Senior Analyst

• Approximately 3–6 years’ experience in finance, energy, infrastructure, transactions or related fields.
• Strong financial modelling and quantitative analysis skills, with experience building, reviewing and refining models for complex investments.
• Demonstrated commercial acumen and ability to evaluate market, technology and risk considerations.
• Experience leading or coordinating due diligence activities across multiple disciplines.
• Proven experience engaging directly with external stakeholders such as applicants, advisors and technical experts.
• Experience mentoring or guiding junior staff and supporting quality delivery.

Skills and capabilities (both roles)

• Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
• High level proficiency in Excel, with the ability to work comfortably with data and data tools.
• Ability to synthesise complex technical and commercial information into clear, concise recommendations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Well organised, reliable and able to manage competing deliverables.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Curious, proactive and engaged with emerging issues and trends, with a genuine interest in, or experience with, the renewable energy sector.
• Collaborative, team‑oriented and stakeholder focused.

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in finance, commerce, mathematics, actuarial studies, engineering, science or a related quantitative discipline.
